| I am sure I'm alone in thinking this a great injustice and a clear violation of our rights as students. We have no grounds to object to the confiscation of guns and knives, but cell phones and ipods/mp3 players/cd players removal is completely uncalled for and pointless. Stuyvesant has long operated under a "Don't ask, Don't tell policy" regarding these devices. If teachers do not have the control over their classes to stop kids from using cell phones and mp3 players, clearly the issue will not be resolved by removing the electronic devices - as a friend put it "some teachers are incompetent and some kids are obnoxious. Take away the phones and iPods, and the teachers will still be incompetent and the kids will still be obnoxious." Our rights have already been trampled enough, and this is not yet another procedure we sit back and watch become commonplace! If we don't stop it now, when?
What we propose is essentially a strike. Since we are not allowed to enter the building if the metal scanners are in place without being scanned, we won't. We simply wait on the bridge. A massive student gathering on the bridge will attract media attention! For this to work, we need a large portion of the student body to participate. We're even abiding by the law - they can't FORCE us to go thorough the metal scanners, and we can't go to school unless we go through by their own decree. The city is legally required to post notices in front of the school to warn us about the metal detectors. If you see these notices, stand on the bridge (but do not block it) and encourage other students to do the same.
We are also considering drafting an "Op-Ed" piece to send to several publications which will hopefully publish it. It may be even stronger if we send it with a signed petition of (hopefully) hundreds of names of outraged students.
Please pass this information on to as many people as possible. Please leave a comment here or in the chatterbox to let us know you're with us.
